Rad-hard & space-grade silicon
Space electronics must survive radiation no commercial fab designs for; the qualified supplier list is short and defense-gated.
Space electronics live or die by a physical fact commercial fabs refuse to design for: orbit bathes silicon in total ionizing dose (TID) and heavy ions that flip bits and latch up CMOS. A part that runs your phone dies in months at GEO. The fix — radiation-hardened-by-design silicon, or radiation-tolerant parts characterized and screened to MIL-PRF-38535 QML Class V — comes from a short, defense-gated supplier list. That list, not launch cadence, is the real constraint on building a satellite that survives its mission.
Who owns it
The high end — flight processors and FPGAs — is concentrated. BAE Systems' RAD750 is the industry workhorse, flying on 100-plus satellites including the GPS III navigation payload, with the RAD5500/RAD5545 quad-core as successor. Frontgrade — the ex-Cobham/CAES space unit Veritas Capital rebranded in 2023 — owns the other processor franchise through Frontgrade Gaisler, whose LEON/NOEL-V line supplies ESA's Next-Generation Microprocessor: the QML-V-certified GR740 and the octa-core GR765 whose product brief shipped November 2025. Microchip's RTG4 FPGAs hold QML Class V; its RT PolarFire reached QML Class Q in July 2025. Below the processors, the analog/power/data-converter layer is a catalog business: Texas Instruments runs 250-plus QML-V space-grade parts, STMicroelectronics claims 40 years of space heritage, and Teledyne e2v supplies space imaging sensors, DDR4 and Qormino processing modules.
What breaks it
Qualification is the moat and the bottleneck. Getting a part to QML-V can take years, gated in part by access to America's four heavy-ion test facilities — a queue measured in years, which DARPA's ASSERT program is explicitly trying to compress 10x. The NewSpace counter-trend is real: constellation builders increasingly fly commercial-grade and rad-tolerant plastic-package parts to cut cost, which is exactly why TI and ST launched cheaper LEO-profile lines. That commoditizes the low end while leaving the deep-space/strategic high end defense-gated. The export-control overlay (ITAR/EAR) is what keeps the qualified vendor list short and foreign substitution slow.
What forces the reprice
This is a derivative, not a pure-play, story. The reprice triggers are program awards (ESA/DLA QML certifications, DARPA ASSERT phase awards, new constellation design wins), and the quarterly read-throughs where space content is buried inside diversified analog or instrumentation segments. Teledyne already flagged that visible/IR space detector sales 'increased nicely' in Q1 2026. The SpaceX IPO (SPCX debuted June 12, 2026, closing up 19% at ~$161) re-rated the whole sector's narrative — but SpaceX is a launch/constellation name, not a rad-hard silicon supplier, so it sits outside this chokepoint.
Be honest about size and earliness
The whole rad-hard/space-grade semiconductor market was ~$1.85B in 2025 — smaller than a single mid-cap's quarter. For every listed name here, space is a rounding error: TI, ST, Microchip and ON are analog/MCU giants where rad-hard is a high-margin niche, not a growth driver you can model. The one company where this chokepoint is the entire business — Frontgrade — is private and owned by a PE firm with no listed parent, so there is no clean way to own the purest exposure. Tier this as derivative optionality and a qualitative read on supply-chain control, never as a revenue line. Specialist outlets cover launch and constellations; the edge here is mapping the qualified-vendor list and the QML-V/test-facility bottleneck that decides whose silicon actually flies — and being blunt that the only true pure-play is unlistable.
Who owns the choke
BAE Systems plc (ADR)
BAE Systems' RAD750 radiation-hardened PowerPC is the workhorse of the space industry, powering more than 100 satellites including the navigation payload on the GPS III constellation; the RAD5500/RAD5545 quad-core platform is its higher-performance successor.
- Bull
- If rad-hard silicon stays the binding constraint, BAE's RAD750 is the industry workhorse on 100-plus satellites including GPS III, with the RAD5500/RAD5545 as successor.
- Bear
- The space rad-hard franchise is a small line inside BAE Systems, and exposure comes via an OTC ADR rather than the primary UK listing.
Frontgrade Technologies
Veritas Capital rebranded CAES Space Systems as Frontgrade in January 2023; its Frontgrade Gaisler unit supplies ESA's Next-Generation Microprocessor family — the DLA-certified QML-V GR740 and the octa-core LEON5FT/NOEL-V GR765 (product brief released November 2025) — alongside rad-hard ASICs, mission processors and power management.
- Bull
- If processor scarcity holds, Frontgrade Gaisler owns one of two rad-hard processor franchises, supplying ESA's QML-V GR740 and octa-core GR765 plus rad-hard ASICs.
- Bear
- Frontgrade is privately held under Veritas Capital with no listed exposure path, so the chokepoint position is untradable for public investors.
Microchip Technology Inc.
Microchip's RTG4 FPGAs hold QML Class V (the highest space qualification); its newer Radiation-Tolerant PolarFire RTPF500ZT reached QML Class Q in July 2025, adding enhanced single-event-latch-up immunity at up to 50% less power than SRAM-based alternatives.
- Bull
- If rad-hard silicon stays defense-gated, Microchip's RTG4 holds QML Class V and its RT PolarFire hit QML Class Q with lower power and latch-up immunity.
- Bear
- Space-grade products are a small slice of Microchip's broad, cyclical analog/embedded business, so the chokepoint exposure is heavily diluted within the parent.
Mercury Systems, Inc.
Mercury Systems supplies radiation-tolerant space data-management hardware — the RH304T solid-state data recorder and SpaceVPX boards built on AMD Versal SoCs for ML/SDR in orbit — packaging rad-tolerant components into MOSA-aligned subsystems rather than designing rad-hard silicon itself.
- Bull
- If rad-tolerant data handling scales in orbit, Mercury packages rad-tolerant recorders and Versal-based SpaceVPX boards into MOSA-aligned subsystems for ML and SDR.
- Bear
- Mercury packages others' rad-tolerant components rather than designing rad-hard silicon itself, leaving it without the defining scarce part at the chokepoint's core.
STMicroelectronics N.V. (ADR)
STMicroelectronics cites 40+ years of space heritage and in March 2022 launched its first plastic-package radiation-hardened ICs for NewSpace LEO satellites (adding rad-hard point-of-load converters in June 2024), with TID immunity to 50 krad(Si) and SEL immunity to 62.5 MeV·cm²/mg, alongside rad-hard ASIC platforms.
- Bull
- If NewSpace LEO needs cheaper rad-hard parts, STMicroelectronics brings 40+ years of space heritage, plastic-package rad-hard ICs and rad-hard ASIC platforms.
- Bear
- Space is a tiny line inside a large, cyclical broad-line semiconductor company, and exposure comes via an ADR rather than the primary European listing.
Teledyne Technologies Incorporated
Teledyne e2v (a Teledyne subsidiary since 2017) supplies space-qualified imaging sensors plus the Qormino QLS1046-Space rad-tolerant Arm processing module (100 krad TID, 60 MeV.cm2/mg SEL immunity) and 16GB rad-tolerant DDR4, with flight-model production samples delivered October 2025; Q1 2026 commentary cited rising space detector sales.
- Bull
- If rad-tolerant compute and imaging scale, Teledyne e2v supplies space-qualified sensors, the Qormino Arm module and rad-tolerant DDR4 with rising detector sales.
- Bear
- Space products are a small slice of diversified instrumentation firm Teledyne, so the chokepoint exposure is heavily diluted inside the much larger parent.
Texas Instruments Incorporated
Texas Instruments carries a portfolio of more than 250 QML Class V space-grade and radiation-tolerant products — data converters, power management, amplifiers, interfaces and embedded processing — qualified per MIL-PRF-38535 RHA, and has expanded into lower-cost rad-tolerant plastic packages for NewSpace LEO missions.
- Bull
- If rad-hard silicon stays defense-gated, TI carries 250+ QML Class V space-grade and rad-tolerant parts and has expanded into lower-cost plastic packages for NewSpace.
- Bear
- Space-grade parts are an immaterial line inside TI's vast, cyclical analog and embedded portfolio, so the chokepoint exposure is negligibly diluted.
