Daily brief · 2026-10-16
Rocket Lab fell 6.6% after slipping Neutron's maiden launch to 2027 on carbon-fiber defects, while the broader satellite basket rose on a risk-on rotation.
The technical leader was Comtech (CMTL), up 13.3% to $1.45 — but at that price it is a distressed small-cap bouncing off multi-month lows, a low-float move on a risk-on day that shouldn't be over-read as a signal on the ground-systems chokepoint it maps. The substantive gainer was Karman Space & Defense (KRMN), +12.5% to $33.90, on the propulsion-and-propellants rung — the solid-motor and payload-integration hardware that gates both launch cadence and the interceptor buildout. Thursday's tape helped: after Wednesday's hot-CPI selloff in tech, the Dow rose about 1.1% and capital rotated into heavily-sold speculative names.
The laggard was Rocket Lab (RKLB), down 6.6% to $55.25 (as much as 14% intraday) after it pushed the maiden launch of its Neutron medium-lift rocket into 2027. CEO Peter Beck said inspections found manufacturing defects — tiny air pockets between carbon-fiber layers in the first stage's forward propellant dome. For the vertical this hits the launch chokepoint directly: Neutron is the only near-term Western vehicle positioned to contest SpaceX on reusable medium-lift, and the slip removes the Q4-2026 maiden-launch milestone from the calendar entirely. KeyBanc kept its Buy but cut its target to $100 from $135; the stock is now down roughly 25% year-to-date.
Away from launch, the satellite and payload rungs leaned green. Direct-to-device and comms led: AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) +5.5% to $44.46 and Telesat (TSAT) +5.2% to $46.52. Lunar and small-launch names firmed — Intuitive Machines (LUNR) +5.0% to $11.57 and Firefly (FLY) +4.8% to $17.83 — alongside the imagery and in-space-manufacturing rung: BlackSky (BKSY) +4.5% to $18.45, MDA Space (MDA) +4.0% to $28.67, Redwire (RDW) +3.4% to $8.91 and Planet (PL) +2.9% to $14.54. Microchip (MCHP) added 4.2% to $74.26 and Boeing (BA) 2.2% to $188.73; the day's notable decliner was timing specialist SiTime (SITM), −4.4% to $501.59, on the PNT rung.
The near calendar centers on cadence. Satellogic (SATL) targets its first AI-first constellation satellite launch around October 31, and China's suspension of its germanium/gallium export ban — inputs to space-grade compound semiconductors — expires November 27. SpaceX's (SPCX) 180-day post-IPO lock-up fully releases December 9, a supply overhang to watch. With Neutron now a 2027 story, the launch chokepoint's competitive clock resets in SpaceX's favor for another year.
