Daily brief · 2026-10-15
A hot CPI print crushed the high-beta space names — BlackSky and AST SpaceMobile both -10.5%, launch and EO down 7-10% — while the defense primes held, Northrop +3.0%, on a flight-to-safety session.
The only green in the space basket Wednesday came from the Fundrise Innovation Fund (VCX), up 4.7% to $25.38 — a private-market crossover vehicle whose daily NAV isn't a tape signal — and from the defense primes that trade as ballast. Among operating-company equities, Northrop Grumman (NOC) led, +3.0% to $495.69, with BAE Systems (BAESY) +1.5% and L3Harris (LHX) +1.2%. The session was macro-driven: a hotter-than-expected September CPI delivered the worst day for stocks since July, and the market sold duration and bought cash flow. In a vertical that splits cleanly between funded primes and pre-revenue new-space, that split was the whole story.
The laggard was BlackSky (BKSY), down 10.5% to $17.65, a hair worse than AST SpaceMobile (ASTS), also -10.5% to $42.14 — the two poles of the high-beta new-space complex, earth-observation and direct-to-device, both selling off on no company news beyond a risk-off tape that punishes long-dated, capital-hungry stories. The damage was broad across the rungs the vertical maps as chokepoints. Launch: Rocket Lab (RKLB) -7.8% to $59.18, Firefly (FLY) -7.2% to $17.02. Lunar and in-space services: Intuitive Machines (LUNR) -9.5% to $11.02, Redwire (RDW) -5.9% to $8.62. Earth-observation: Planet (PL) -6.8% to $14.13, Satellogic (SATL) -9.3% to $4.13.
The timing-and-silicon rung — the precision oscillators and radiation-hardened parts that are the unglamorous chokepoint under every satellite and constellation — sold with the complex: SiTime (SITM) -9.4% to $524.93 and STMicroelectronics (STM) -5.4% to $46.90. Broadband and ground systems weakened too: Viasat (VSAT) -7.7% to $61.73, with IonQ (IONQ), carried here for its space-based quantum-sensing exposure, down 9.5% to $31.42. SpaceX's tracking stock (SPCX) held up better than the public-market pure plays at -2.8% to $152.16 — the market still prices the launch-and-constellation incumbent as a different kind of risk than the sub-scale challengers.
The near calendar is event-dense for the pre-revenue names that just sold hardest. Satellogic targets its first AI-first constellation satellite launch October 31, Rocket Lab's Neutron reusable medium-lift has a Q4 maiden-flight window, and the SpaceX 180-day IPO lock-up fully expires December 9 — a supply overhang worth watching. On the policy side, the L3Harris/AE Industrial 'Rocketdyne' propulsion sale is expected to close by year-end, and additional NRO Strategic Commercial Enhancement awards are due in late 2026. Each is a fundamentals catalyst for a specific chokepoint, but until the rate picture resets, the new-space names will keep trading as the market's highest-beta expression of the macro.
