AST SpaceMobile fell 8.5% on a Piper Sandler downgrade and SpaceX direct-to-cell pressure, while MDA Space bounced 4.1% on heavy volume with no confirmed catalyst.

MDA Space (MDA) was the space basket's leader Tuesday, up 4.1% to $28.58 — but it was a one-day bounce on unusually heavy volume rather than a move the news can explain. No catalyst surfaced for the satellite-servicing and robotics specialist; the stock had been down about 5.5% on the week and roughly flat on the month even after the pop, which still leaves it up ~47% year-to-date. The clean-data gainers around it were the component names, not the constellation operators: Texas Instruments (TXN) +2.2% to $287.85, SiTime (SITM) +1.7% to $579.66, and Telesat (TSAT) +1.2% to $45.72. With no verified driver for the leader, the session's real signal was on the downside.

The laggard was AST SpaceMobile (ASTS), down 8.5% to $47.07, and here the catalyst was concrete: Piper Sandler downgraded the stock to Neutral from Overweight and cut its price target to $54 from $98, citing satellite-deployment pace and revenue-conversion risk. The downgrade landed on top of a competitive overhang — SpaceX's roughly $8B low-band spectrum deal on October 9 sharpened the direct-to-cell rivalry that is the whole thesis for a space-based cellular network. This is the vertical's spectrum-and-constellation chokepoint repricing: owning the beam-to-phone link means nothing if a better-capitalized rival secures the spectrum first. The drop left ASTS down ~36% year-to-date and probing new lows.

The pressure ran through the rest of the launch-and-LEO complex. Karman (KRMN) fell 5.4% to $30.15, Firefly (FLY) 5.3% to $18.34, Intuitive Machines (LUNR) 5.3% to $12.18, Planet Labs (PL) 5.0% to $15.16, Satellogic (SATL) 3.4% to $4.55, and Rocket Lab (RKLB) 2.3% to $64.22 — the cadence and imaging rungs that depend on cheap, frequent access to orbit. The incumbent comms-sat and prime-contractor names held up better: Iridium (IRDM) -0.7% to $46.73, Globalstar (GSAT) -0.4% to $82.68, Northrop (NOC) -0.7% to $481.38, Boeing (BA) -1.6% to $186.49. The split says the market is discriminating between speculative constellation economics and contracted government backlog.

The calendar front-loads the constellation story. Satellogic's first AI-first constellation satellite launch is slated for October 31, a direct test of the imaging-cadence thesis that sold off Tuesday. Then the supply picture tightens: China's germanium/gallium export-ban suspension expires November 27 (the compound-semiconductor rung for space-grade electronics), SpaceX's full IPO lock-up expires December 9, and Rocket Lab's reusable Neutron is targeting a maiden-launch window in Q4 — the medium-lift cadence milestone the launch rung is waiting on.
