Daily brief · 2026-10-07
AST SpaceMobile led on a US-Japan statement and a Telus direct-to-device test while the defence primes, led by BAE, sold off.
AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) led the vertical, up 8.0% to $63.12, the ground segment & direct-to-device chokepoint. A joint US–Japan science-and-technology statement explicitly welcomed the Rakuten Group–AST cooperation on LEO satellite infrastructure, and AST announced its first satellite-to-smartphone integration test with Canada's Telus — two concrete direct-to-device milestones in a single session. The move came against a cautious sell side: B. Riley had cut the name to Neutral with a $65 target on October 2, and William Blair recently trimmed its 2027 revenue estimate to $459M from $752M, so Tuesday was the hardware and partnership news outrunning the skeptics.
The laggard was BAE Systems' ADR (BAESY), down 4.0% to $98.47, its London line off about 4.1% as UK and European defence primes sold off even as the FTSE 100 rose on softer oil and easing gilt yields — and despite a same-day Lockheed Martin award for F-35 electronic-warfare systems. CACI (CACI) −3.9% to $599.64 fell with the space-and-intel services rung. Both reads are a rotation out of defence primes, not company-specific breakage.
Earth observation & space data was broadly bid: Planet Labs (PL) +7.0% to $18.57 and BlackSky (BKSY) +6.0% to $22.66, with Viasat (VSAT) +6.6% on the ground-segment rung and Intuitive Machines (LUNR) +5.4% in in-space infrastructure. Launch & reusability firmed, Rocket Lab (RKLB) +2.8% to $75.06. The session split cleanly between a strong commercial-smallsat/EO/direct-to-device side and a weak traditional-prime side.
The calendar is launch- and listing-heavy into year-end. Satellogic's first AI-first constellation satellite is targeted for around October 31; Rocket Lab's Neutron medium-lift maiden launch sits in a Q4 window; the SpaceX IPO lock-up fully expires December 9; and SDA Tranche 3 Tracking Layer production milestones frame the next optical-terminal demand wave. Those are the hard dates the EO and launch rungs will trade against from here.
