Daily brief · 2026-09-23
Space-materials supplier 5N Plus jumped 10% on its critical-materials positioning while Telesat led the satellite operators lower.
5N Plus (FPLSF) led the vertical, up 10.0% to $21.23 on its US OTC line, extending a multi-day run built on its critical-materials franchise: germanium, cadmium-telluride, and space-grade solar cells and compound-semiconductor substrates. The company is carrying a ~$420M backlog and has reaffirmed 2026 EBITDA guidance, yet still trades below the ~$34 average analyst target. It sits at the upstream materials chokepoint the vertical maps — the specialty semiconductors and photovoltaics that space hardware cannot be built without — and its germanium exposure ties directly to the China export-control clock. (The line is a thinly traded foreign-ordinary listing; the move is close-to-close verified for its Sept 22 session.)
Telesat (TSAT) was the laggard, down 5.1% to $48.79, with no company-specific catalyst surfacing — a pullback after recent strength rather than a news event. Telesat sits on the capital-intensive constellation rung, where GEO incumbents and LEO builders alike must fund enormous fleets before revenue scales, and the name trades with sentiment around that spend.
The broader tape favored launch and LEO over the primes. Rocket Lab (RKLB) +3.0% to $71.98, Intuitive Machines (LUNR) +3.3% to $16.24, AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) +2.9% to $63.69, Satellogic (SATL) +2.9%, Redwire (RDW) +1.4% and Spire (SPIR) +2.1% carried the access-to-orbit and small-sat rungs, with MDA Space (MDA) −1.5% the exception. The defense-aerospace primes dragged, mirroring weakness across the sister verticals: Northrop Grumman (NOC) −3.2% to $509.86, Karman (KRMN) −4.9% to $33.50, Frequency Electronics (FEIM) −4.4% to $85.05, and CACI (CACI) −3.1%.
The catalysts ahead are transaction- and launch-driven. L3Harris's Rocketdyne (RL10) majority sale to AE Industrial is expected to close in 2H 2026, reshaping the propulsion chokepoint. Satellogic targets its first AI-first constellation-satellite launch around Oct 31, and Rocket Lab's Neutron medium-lift maiden-launch window sits in Q4 — the read on reusable US launch supply. SpaceX's 180-day IPO lockup fully expires Dec 9. And the Nov 27 expiry of China's germanium/gallium export-ban suspension bears directly on 5N Plus and the upstream materials rung.
