Daily brief · 2026-09-09
A risk-off market couldn't stop a broad space rally — Earth-observation and defense-space names ran, led by Satellogic's continued surge.
The broad tape fell on Tuesday — S&P 500 −0.58%, Dow −1.18% on the oil spike — but the space basket rallied across almost every chokepoint. Satellogic (SATL) led again, up 15.3% to $5.35, extending a run that has made it one of 2026's top-performing space names. There was no discrete catalyst on the day; the move continues a months-long re-rate on rising Earth-observation demand, defense-imagery contracts and its AI-first satellite architecture. Satellogic sits squarely on the earth-observation chokepoint — high-resolution, high-revisit imaging capacity — and the next hard test of the thesis is dated: its first AI-first constellation satellite launch is targeted for Oct 31.
The laggard was SiTime (SITM), down 2.1% to $598.95, on the atomic-clocks-and-PNT chokepoint — the precision-timing silicon that keeps constellations synchronized. The move was a modest give-back in a high-priced momentum name on a risk-off day, not a fundamental shift, and it stood out only because so little else in the basket was red.
The rally was broad and defense-tilted. BlackSky (BKSY) rose 7.7% to $22.08 on the earth-observation chokepoint alongside Satellogic, and Frequency Electronics (FEIM) added 7.6% to $65.28 on the atomic-clocks/PNT side — the two ends of the intelligence-collection stack running together. Redwire (RDW) climbed 6.6% to $11.23 across in-space infrastructure and propulsion, AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) gained 6.1% to $66.12 on the ground-segment and direct-to-device chokepoint, and Intuitive Machines (LUNR) rose 5.9% to $15.68 on in-space infrastructure. With oil and geopolitics driving the macro, the defense-space complex read as a haven rather than a casualty.
The near calendar is dense with prints and launches. Planet Labs reports fiscal-Q2 results Sept 14, a direct read on Earth-observation demand behind the Satellogic and BlackSky moves; Astroscale's APS-R Space Force refueler is set to launch to GEO around Sept 15, a milestone for the in-space-servicing chokepoint. Later, L3Harris's Rocketdyne propulsion sale to AE Industrial is expected to close by end-September, Satellogic's constellation launch lands Oct 31, and SDA Tranche 3 tracking-layer milestones plus the full SpaceX IPO lock-up expiry (Dec 9) frame the fourth quarter — the supply-side events that will test whether the demand the tape is pricing shows up in orbit.
