A COO exit sank Spire and the small-cap space complex sold off hard, while launch primes held better on a broad risk-off.
The space basket had almost nowhere to hide on a risk-off session, and its leader was a small satcom name: Gilat Satellite Networks (GILT) rose 1.6% to $10.06. Gilat sits on the ground-segment chokepoint — the modems, gateways and ground stations that make orbital capacity usable — and, as an Israeli name, caught a modest bid on the same Middle East escalation that lifted the broader defense complex. It was the only meaningful green in a basket that was otherwise broadly and sharply lower.
Spire Global (SPIR) fell 9.4% to $12.02, the basket's worst, on company-specific news: COO Celia Pelaz's resignation, effective September 30, layered onto standing concerns about the company's cash burn. Spire sits on the space-data-services node (RF, weather, maritime tracking), and an executive departure at a cash-consuming small-cap is exactly the kind of headline a risk-off tape punishes hardest. The broader small-cap space complex sold with it: Astroscale's ADR (ASRHF) −7.7%, BlackSky (BKSY) −7.1% to $21.45, Comtech (CMTL) −7.1%, 5N Plus (FPLSF) −5.8%, AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) −5.6% to $55.80, and Satellogic (SATL) −5.5%.
The launch and prime-contractor tier held up better than the data-and-small-cap tier, a familiar risk-off pattern: Rocket Lab (RKLB) −2.2% to $62.54, SpaceX's crossover proxy (SPCX) −1.0% to $142.23, Northrop Grumman (NOC) −1.3%, Boeing (BA) −1.0%, and CACI actually +1.0% on the defense-services bid. Intuitive Machines (LUNR) −4.2% to $14.72, Redwire (RDW) −4.1% and Planet Labs (PL) −3.0% rounded out the EO-and-lunar decliners. The pattern was beta, not fundamentals — the deepest names in the launch-and-payload chokepoint were comparatively resilient.
The near calendar is launch- and earnings-heavy. Planet Labs reports fiscal Q2 on September 14, and Astroscale's APS-R Space Force refueler is slated to launch to GEO around September 15 — a direct test of the in-orbit-servicing chokepoint. L3Harris's sale of its Rocketdyne/RL10 space-propulsion line to AE Industrial is expected to close by quarter-end. Further out, Satellogic's first AI-first satellite launch is targeted for late October, and SpaceX's 180-day IPO lockup fully expires December 9.
