Rad-hard defense electronics led while the smallsat and direct-to-cell names sold off, IonQ dragged lower by a quantum-wide derisk.

The rad-hard electronics chokepoint led Wednesday. Mercury Systems was the desk's leader, up 2.3% to $89.76, extending a firm run for secure signal-processing after Baird named it a fresh bullish pick on August 21. Mercury supplies the radiation-tolerant computing and RF processing that sits inside space and defense payloads — the piece that has to survive orbit and jam-heavy environments — and it rallied with the broader defense-electronics complex: CACI rose 2.1% to $624.74, Moog 1.9% to $384.03 and Northrop Grumman 1.4% to $549.95.

The laggard was the vertical's quantum-adjacent name. IonQ fell 4.8% to $40.03, caught in a sector-wide derisk across pure-play quantum after D-Wave disclosed a CFO retirement — a company-specific headline that dragged the whole cluster down. IonQ is the vertical's optionality on quantum networking and precision timing rather than a launch or satellite operator, so it trades on quantum-sector sentiment, not the space tape, and Wednesday it took the group's hit.

The rest of the basket leaned soft in the smallsat and connectivity layer — the capital-intensive, pre-scale end of the chokepoint. Satellogic fell 4.2% to $5.13, direct-to-cell name AST SpaceMobile 3.4% to $59.88, Intuitive Machines 3.0% to $16.11, BlackSky 2.1% and Redwire 1.8%; Planet Labs slipped 1.8% to $21.16 and Rocket Lab 1.1% to $66.18. Timing-and-PNT silicon held better, with SiTime up 0.5% to $596.97, and the SpaceX tracker (SPCX) rose 1.2% to $139.63 as the launch-monopoly proxy.

The calendar picks up quickly. SDA's Tranche 2 Transport Layer launches begin in September; Planet Labs reports fiscal Q2 on September 14; and Astroscale's APS-R Space Force refueler is slated to launch to GEO around September 15, a real demonstration for the on-orbit servicing chokepoint. Further out, L3Harris's Rocketdyne majority sale is expected to close in the second half, Satellogic targets its first AI-first constellation satellite launch October 31, and Rocket Lab's Neutron holds a Q4 maiden-launch window — the medium-lift entrant that would loosen the launch bottleneck. SpaceX's post-IPO lockup fully expires December 9.
