Earth-observation and direct-to-device names led a risk-on space tape, with Satellogic up 7.9% and AST SpaceMobile up 5.5%, while Frequency Electronics fell on soft results.

The tape's top gainer among the desk's names was IonQ, +8.0% to $44.86 — but honestly, on a quantum-computing sector rally, not a space catalyst. The desk tracks IonQ for its optical-terminals exposure since it absorbed laser-comms maker Skyloom, yet Friday's move rode a broad surge in quantum pure-plays after a blockbuster earnings print elsewhere in that group. The genuinely space-native leadership was one notch down and worth more attention: Satellogic +7.9% to $5.72 in earth observation and AST SpaceMobile +5.5% to $68.65 in the ground-segment and direct-to-device strait, both lifted by a risk-on session as strong August flash-PMI data pushed capital into high-beta growth. BlackSky (+3.8% to $27.75) and Intuitive Machines (+2.2% to $18.32) rounded out a firm EO-and-services complex.

The laggard was the timing chokepoint. Frequency Electronics fell −5.9% to $61.69 after soft fiscal-2026 results — declining sales and weaker margins, partly on government-program delays — compounded by insider selling and profit-taking off a run that carried the stock from the mid-$20s to the low-$80s over the year. FEI builds the rubidium atomic frequency standards qualified for GPS IIIF, so it sits at the atomic-clocks-and-space-PNT bottleneck; the pullback is a single-name results story, not a crack in the strait, whose strategic importance only grows as resilient PNT becomes a defense priority.

The primes and launch names were the quiet corner. Northrop Grumman eased −2.3% to $551.03 and Rocket Lab −0.5% to $72.57, a mild give-back against the growth-led rally rather than any company-specific news. The split — EO and direct-to-device bid, primes and precision-timing soft — is the market rewarding the commercial-data and connectivity layers over the slower-moving hardware incumbents.

The calendar is active. The Small Satellite Conference runs in Salt Lake City in late August, Planet Labs reports fiscal Q2 on September 14, and Astroscale's APS-R Space Force refueler is slated to launch to GEO around September 15 — a live test of the in-space-servicing thesis. Satellogic's first AI-first constellation satellite is targeted for October 31, Rocket Lab's Neutron medium-lift maiden flight sits in a Q4 window, and the SpaceX (SPCX) full IPO lock-up expires December 9. Today rewarded the data-and-connectivity straits; those launches and prints are what grade them.
