Northrop caught a defense flight-to-quality bid, up 3.3% on an E-2D milestone, while SiTime's timing chips fell 9.3% and the satellite-comms basket sold with the semis.

The launch-and-in-space-infrastructure choke led on a flight to defense quality. Northrop Grumman rose +3.3% to $589.14 after it and the U.S. Navy completed a key design review for the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye modernization, clearing the aircraft toward future flight tests — a milestone that stacked on stronger-than-expected Q2 results, raised full-year guidance, a record backlog, and new missile-defense framework agreements. Northrop's Space Systems segment — solid rocket motors, satellites, the launch and on-orbit hardware this vertical maps — is exactly the kind of program-backed, budget-insulated exposure that catches a bid when yields sit near multiyear highs and the speculative end of the tape sells. (The raw top gainer was Comtech, a $1.75 satcom microcap, +4.8% on no clear news — noise, not signal.)

The laggard was the atomic-clocks-and-PNT choke, swept into the semiconductor rout. SiTime fell −9.3% to $680.06 with no company-specific news, derating alongside a PHLX Semiconductor Index that dropped more than 3% on the day. Precision MEMS timing is the space PNT choke — the GPS-independent frequency reference that keeps constellations, ground terminals, and navigation payloads synchronized — and SiTime is the high-multiple pure-play on it, so when the market reprices the whole timing-and-precision-silicon complex, this is the name that moves most. The choke's demand is intact; its stock simply trades with the chips.

The rest of the basket sold with growth. The satellite-comms and earth-observation names led lower — Viasat −6.6% to $76.07, Telesat −6.4% to $47.31, BlackSky −5.9% to $28.94, AST SpaceMobile −5.7% to $67.07, Planet Labs −4.2% to $23.36 — and the launch-and-servicing developers followed: Intuitive Machines −5.3% to $19.31 (reporting Q2 that day), Rocket Lab −3.6% to $79.16, Redwire −3.5%, MDA −3.5%, the SpaceX vehicle (SPCX) −2.0% to $143.34. The defense primes were the shelter — Northrop aside, CACI +1.0% and L3Harris +0.4% held green while Boeing slipped −1.3% to $223.06 — a clean split between budget-backed hardware and the higher-beta newspace growth trade.

The calendar is busy. SpaceX's first post-IPO quarterly print is estimated around August 20 with its lock-up's first tranche releasing near August 21, and the 40th Small Satellite Conference convenes in Salt Lake City the week of August 23. Into September, the SDA Tranche 2 Transport Layer launches begin around the 1st, Planet Labs reports fiscal Q2 on the 14th, and Astroscale's APS-R Space Force refueler is slated to launch to GEO on the 15th — a live test of the in-space-servicing choke. The near-term tell is whether the newspace-comms selloff is the semiconductor derating bleeding across, or a deeper repricing of pre-revenue constellation economics.
