A $1.9B Canadian military-satcom contract sent Telesat up a third in a day, anchoring a broad space-sector relief rally; 5N Plus lagged on a margin miss.

Telesat led the vertical and the entire tape, jumping +36.3% to $54.75 on the largest contract in its history: a US$1.9B award from the Government of Canada for Arctic military satcom, funding a 69-satellite expansion of the Lightspeed LEO constellation from 156 to 225 spacecraft, with the birds built by MDA Space. That is the optical-terminals chokepoint paying off — Lightspeed's differentiator is its optical inter-satellite mesh, and a sovereign Arctic-coverage buyer is exactly the anchor tenant that de-risks the build. The deal adds roughly US$3.3B to backlog with milestone payments beginning this quarter, and it lifted the builder too: MDA rose +6.4% to $34.27 at the in-space-infrastructure choke.

The laggard was an earnings-driven give-back, not sector weakness. 5N Plus's US line fell −7.7% to $21.23 after the company reported Q2 the prior evening: revenue beat, up 28% to $122.4M, but adjusted gross margin compressed to 30.3% from 34.6% a year earlier as higher metal and chemical input costs diluted the volume gains. 5N Plus sits at the space-solar-power chokepoint — the germanium substrates and III-V materials that go into satellite solar cells — so the margin line is the read that matters, and the market sold the print. It was a real move on real news, echoed from the Canadian ordinary line, not a thin-tape artifact.

The rest of the basket rode a broad relief rally ahead of SpaceX's debut earnings as a public company, rebounding off a brutal July. Frequency Electronics gained +16.7% and Astroscale's US line +15.3%, both small-cap sympathy moves without dated catalysts. Satellogic rose +13.5% and AST SpaceMobile +10.7% to $70.31 as it positions into a BlueBird launch window and its own August report. Redwire added +10.3%, with Rocket Lab +5.8% to $74.48, Intuitive Machines +6.6% and Planet Labs +6.0% filling out the green. Karman (+7.0%) and BlackSky (+6.3%) rounded out a session with almost no red among the liquid names.

The calendar turns immediately operational. BlackSky and Rocket Lab both report Q2 on August 6 — Rocket Lab's first full quarter owning Mynaric's laser-terminal line at the optical-comms choke. AST SpaceMobile reports August 10 alongside its BlueBird deployment cadence, Redwire follows August 12, and Telesat's own Q2 on August 13 will now be read against the Lightspeed backlog just booked. Further out, the Northrop/DARPA robotic-servicing vehicle launches mid-month.
