The defense-earnings updraft lifted the RF-and-radhard-electronics chokepoint while STMicro's guidance cut dragged the space-semiconductor names.
Mercury Systems led the basket, up 7.5% to $106.34, catching the same defense-earnings updraft that ran through the sector after AeroVironment's record fiscal Q4 and RTX's beat-and-raise. Mercury is the RF-and-rad-hard-processing chokepoint for space and defense — the secure signal-processing and space-qualified electronics that sit inside payloads and ground systems — and with the primes printing records, the content suppliers that ride their programs re-rated hardest. There was no Mercury-specific disclosure behind the move; it was sympathy with a sector the market re-rated on hard numbers, ahead of Mercury's own fiscal-Q4 print.
STMicroelectronics was the laggard, down 18.7% to $53.49, after a Q2 beat was undone by a core-EBITDA miss and Q3 revenue guided to a $3.70B midpoint below ~$3.9B consensus. STM is the semiconductor-content chokepoint for the smallsat and payload names — the RF, power, and sensing silicon in a modern bus — so its guidance cut pulled the space-semiconductor cohort with it: Microchip −4.3% to $81.35, Texas Instruments −3.1% to $284.99, and SiTime −2.4% to $576.41. The read is that the parts layer inside the satellite is repricing on softer near-term demand even as the launch-and-payload demand signal holds.
The rest of the tape split along that line. The defense-adjacent names climbed with the primes — L3Harris +5.1% to $299.67 ahead of its own July 29 report, Karman +4.5% to $49.72, CACI +2.8% to $480.61, SpaceX +2.6% to $118.24, Redwire +3.2% to $9.28, and Northrop +1.6% to $533.48 — while the connectivity constellations gave back gains: AST SpaceMobile −4.5% to $59.18 on profit-taking and Intuitive Machines −2.7% to $13.71. It was a session that rewarded the electronics-and-launch chokepoint feeding defense programs and sold the semiconductor content exposed to STM's guide.
The calendar is heavy. Iridium reports today (July 24); 5N Plus and Firefly Aerospace print Aug 4, BlackSky and Rocket Lab — the latter's first full quarter owning Mynaric and CONDOR — on Aug 6, and CACI's fiscal Q4 Aug 7. The hard mission events cluster late in the window: the Northrop/DARPA RSGS robotic-servicing launch on Aug 15, the SmallSat conference opening Aug 23, and the first SDA Tranche 2 Transport Layer launches beginning Sep 1 — the demand pull that has to validate the electronics bid the tape put on today.
