Daily brief · 2026-07-21

Space small-caps sold off in a risk-off tape — Spire Global slid 9.7% on its financing overhang — while only the cislunar and launch-adjacent names found scattered bids ahead of a dense earnings and launch calendar.

Leadership was thin. Intuitive Machines (LUNR), the cislunar-transport-and-services name, rose 2.3% to $13.83 — the clearest gainer among the liquid space equities — while Astroscale's thinly traded US line (ASRHF) nominally ticked 2.5% on negligible volume, tracking its Tokyo session. On a day the sector was broadly sold, what bid there was concentrated in the beyond-LEO logistics chokepoint — lunar landers and on-orbit servicing — rather than the crowded earth-observation and launch tiers. Intuitive Machines reports Q2 on August 18.

The laggard led the tape down. Spire Global (SPIR) fell 9.7% to $10.96, extending a multi-session slide with no fresh headline — the space-based RF, weather and tracking-data name still unwinding on its refinancing, covenant and accounting-restatement overhang after divesting its maritime business. The structural read: in the data-from-orbit chokepoint, balance-sheet fragility is now the binding constraint, not constellation capability, and the market is pricing dilution and financing risk ahead of the data franchise itself.

The selling was broad across the high-beta tiers. Earth observation cracked: Satellogic (SATL) -6.5% to $3.57, BlackSky -1.5%, Planet Labs -1.4%. Launch and launch-hardware sold too: SpaceX's tracking line (SPCX) -3.3% to $119.85, Rocket Lab (RKLB) -2.8% to $65.74, Karman (KRMN) -2.8% and Boeing -2.1%. Direct-to-device and comms softened — Viasat (VSAT) -2.8%, AST SpaceMobile -0.7%. The scattered green sat in launch-adjacent and components: Firefly Aerospace (FLY) +2.1% to $19.67, Redwire (RDW) +1.8%, Comtech +1.9%, while the timing-and-PNT chokepoint (Frequency Electronics (FEIM) +1.2%, SiTime flat) steadied after last week's FEIM surge.

The calendar is dense. Texas Instruments, the rad-hard analog supplier, reports today, July 21; L3Harris, STMicro and Teledyne July 23; Iridium July 24, with its PNT ASIC — the resilient-timing chokepoint as a GPS backup — guided to commercial availability by July 31. Firefly reports August 4; BlackSky and Rocket Lab (its first full quarter owning Mynaric/CONDOR laser-comms) August 6; AST SpaceMobile August 10. Watch the August 15 Northrop/DARPA RSGS servicing-vehicle launch and the August 21 SpaceX (SPCX) lock-up tranche release for supply overhang.
