Daily brief · 2026-07-13
Space-data and launch small-caps de-rated on July 10 — Spire −8.4%, Firefly and Intuitive Machines down hard — while Viasat bucked the tape +4.5% on the spectrum-and-ground chokepoint.
Viasat (VSAT) rose 4.5% to $73.56, the standout in a broadly red space tape, extending a run that has more than doubled the stock this year. There was no dated company catalyst on Friday; the move rode analyst optimism — Oppenheimer's recent Outperform and $140 target among them — and continued re-rating of the SATCOM franchise. For this vertical Viasat sits at the spectrum-and-ground chokepoint: licensed Ka-band capacity and the ground infrastructure that terminates it, the scarce, hard-to-replicate layer beneath every broadband constellation. On a day the speculative names fell, capital rotated toward the operator with cash flow and spectrum on the books.
Spire Global (SPIR) fell 8.4% to $14.70, the laggard, extending a slide that has taken roughly a quarter off the stock over the prior week. Spire's radio-occultation and RF-monitoring data is the downstream, commoditizing end of the space chain — valuable but capital-hungry and slow to monetize — and it de-rated with the rest of the small-cap space-data cohort on no fresh news. The read was risk-off within the vertical: the market marked down the data layer while paying up for spectrum and hardware it can meter.
The selling was broad among the emerging names. Frequency Electronics (FEIM) −6.1% to $57.33, Firefly Aerospace (FLY) −4.7% to $24.09 and Intuitive Machines (LUNR) −4.5% to $16.14 led the launch-and-lander decliners; Planet Labs (PL) −4.2% to $26.05, MDA Space (MDA) −3.9%, Redwire (RDW) −2.8%, BlackSky (BKSY) −2.1% and Rocket Lab (RKLB) −1.8% to $81.04 marked the imagery and infrastructure names lower, with AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) −0.8%. The exceptions were the established defense and comms lines — Northrop Grumman (NOC) +1.4% to $539.63 and Comtech (CMTL) +2.1% — a clean rotation out of speculative space-data into cash-flowing primes.
The calendar front-loads earnings. Texas Instruments reports July 21; L3Harris, STMicroelectronics and Teledyne on July 23; and Iridium — the closest comparable to Viasat's mobile-connectivity chokepoint — on July 24, with its PNT ASIC commercial availability also guided for mid-2026. Firefly, 5N Plus and BlackSky report August 4–6, and Rocket Lab on August 6 in its first full quarter owning Mynaric and CONDOR. The test into month-end is whether the space-data names can show the revenue conversion the tape just declined to pay for in advance.
